Alternative measures
Unia will seek alternative measures, even once legal action has been initiated. These measures are designed to help victim and perpetrator alike. They have an educational/pedagogical leaning, because they allow exchange in relation to the background, meaning and consequences of hate messages, hate crimes and discrimination. In other words they help remedy the damage caused by the circumstances of the case.
Unia seeks to include alternative measures as part of a coherent approach to political, judicial and societal actors. On the strength of our competence to formulate recommendations for these actors we have asked KU Leuven to investigate how alternative measures might be employed. We have also set up two pilot projects in two regions to provide training on this subject.
