Vision, mission and values

Unia's vision and mission describe our commitments and the direction we want move towards in our work and activities. Our values reflect our mission and vision.

Vision

Our vision is set out in the strategic plan 2023-2027. It charts the course for the future based on these 5 strategic axes:

  1. More inclusion and more democracy in a polarised society. How? For example, by identifying polarisation processes and building and strengthening bridges.
  2. More inclusion and more democracy in a digitalised society. How? By exposing the digital divide and the discriminatory effects of artificial intelligence.
  3. Ensure the participation of the most vulnerable people in society, to ensure the respect for their rights and to combat systemic discrimination. How? Among other things, by identifying the mechanisms that lead to increased vulnerability.
  4. Remaining a highlyqualitative equality body: in Belgium and internationally. How? By affirming our status, place and prominence and engaging in partnerships.
  5. Doing what we say. How? By ensuring diversity and inclusion internally and guaranteeing the physical and digital accessibility of our services.

Mission

Our mission can be summarised in the following points:

  • We are an independent public service working with and for people experiencing discrimination, who are living in vulnerable situations, and the organisations representing them.
  • We analyse inequality in Belgium to make recommendations to policymakers at local and inter-federal levels. We advise organisations and companies that want to contribute to an inclusive society and prevent and combat discrimination.
  • We are experts on equality, diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination. As an equality body, we are an organisation of reference at the Belgian and international level
  • We safeguard respect for human rights, especially in relation to disability and racism. Our operations are based on cooperation and respect, with a view to the common good.

Values

Our core values:

  • Spirit of dialogue and cooperation with associations, institutions, bodies and services.
  • Independence and responsibility in accordance with the Paris Principles that set the standards to be met by national human rights institutions.
  • Respect of the work of other actors at local and state level.
  • Respect, cooperation, responsibility and integrity anchored in a code of ethics that employees sign.
