How can I take action for more equality?
As a citizen, you too can take action for greater equality and inclusion.
Promoting equality can happen every day, in all areas of your life. .
What should I do if I notice a problematic situation?
If you encounter a situation that you believe to be discriminatory, that involves you directly or that you have witnessed, report it to Unia!
How can I work towards more inclusion?
The principle of equality means that people in the same situation should be treated the same way, but also that people in different situations should be treated differently.
Working towards greater equality and inclusion means ensuring that everyone’s reality and needs are taken into account.
As part of the implementation of public policy, it means ensuring that the most vulnerable groups are not excluded. It means taking their vulnerability into account, to prevent this from being the cause of discrimination.
Generally, discrimination arises from attitudes linked to stereotypes and prejudices. When we become aware of these stereotypes and prejudices, they will no longer shape our behaviour. To promote greater inclusion, be aware of your stereotypes and prejudices, question them, and do what you can to dispel those of others!
Examples
The digital divide
In recent years, society has become increasingly digital. However, many people, whether because of their age, disability or social condition, do not have access to a computer or the Internet or are not able to use them. When we introduce a digital measure, we must take the specific situation of these people into consideration!
Taking vulnerability into account in housing evictions
Unia receives reports relating to decisions of eviction. If the eviction is not directly linked to a protected criterion, protected by the discrimination law, it seems to us that public housing companies and magistrates must take into account the vulnerability of the tenant on the housing market in their decision. Studies show that one third of households affected by evictions have not found stable housing three years after the eviction procedure.
Taking action for greater equality is also possible in the workplace. Unia has developed the eDiv platform (only available in French and Dutch) for a diverse and inclusive working environment. This online tool is completely free and available for anyone who wants to contribute to improving diversity at work, whether you are a company manager or team leader, in charge of HR, prevention or diversity.
