The Improving equality data collection in Belgium report (2021) is the result of research into data sources on inequality and discrimination. The aim of this Belgian project? To improve the collection and development of equality data in the country. It was co-financed by the REC (Rights, Equality and Citizenship) programme of the European Commission. Unia carried out the project in partnership with the Equal Opportunities Team of FPS Justice.
Data hub with data on (in)equality and discrimination in Belgium
Firstly, Unia compiled an inventory of existing equality data in Belgium. Result: an online data hub in which you can easily search data sources based on various discrimination criteria and areas.
This inventory was compiled thanks to input from civil society organisations and public institutions and through our own proactive research. This process is not yet complete: we are still looking for new sources, so please feel free to send us new data sources!
Final report with recommendations and closing conference
Along with this inventory, Unia published a report with insights and recommendations on equality data. The report exposed several gaps in Belgian equality data. It found, for example, that there are few reliable figures on access to healthcare based on so-called racial criteria. To date, too little data has been collected on sexual orientation or religion. We also note the need for clearer information on the legislation surrounding the processing of personal data. Finally, Unia recommends a coordinated approach around the collection and development of equality data.

Follow-up
A second phase of the project began in early 2023 which focuses on three new discrimination criteria (disability, physical characteristics and health status) and updating the data sources mentioned. You can find more info on the equality data project page (only FR or NL).
