Centre questions the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

15 March 2012

In preparation of a meeting with the State Secretary for Social Affairs, Families and Disabled Persons as well as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice, the Centre would like to question the manner in which the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is envisaged by the European Union.

The current proposition foresees the implication of the European Commission in the Implementation and the Monitoring of the Convention. The Centre considers this approach as contrary to the requirements laid down in article 33§2. The latter specifies that the promotion, protection and monitoring of the Convention has to be realised by an independent mechanism.
